How to Prepare Kids for a Family Photography Session (Stress-Free!)
Family photos are such a beautiful way to capture this season of life — messy hair, giggles, cuddles and all. But if you’re a parent, you probably know that getting little ones ready for a photo shoot can sometimes feel a bit… chaotic.
At Wylde Folk Studio, we’ve photographed countless families across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, and the Gold Coast, and we know that the key to stunning, joy-filled images is keeping the experience relaxed and fun — for both parents and kids.
Here are our top tips to help you prepare your children for a stress-free family photography session.
1. Talk About the Session Ahead of Time
Kids love to know what to expect!
A few days before your shoot, tell them about the session in a fun, positive way — like an adventure or a special family outing. Avoid calling it a “photo shoot,” which can sound formal or intimidating.
Instead, say something like:
“We’re going to play at the park with a photographer who takes really nice photos of families having fun!”
This sets the tone and helps them arrive feeling curious and excited rather than nervous.
2. Keep It Fun and Natural
The best photos happen when your kids are relaxed and being themselves. Don’t worry about perfect poses or forced smiles — that’s our job to guide gently.
We use games, movement, and prompts to create real laughter and connection. Think tickles, running races, and cuddles under the trees. When kids feel like they’re playing rather than performing, the magic happens naturally.
3. Plan Around Naps and Mealtimes
Timing is everything when it comes to kids!
Whenever possible, schedule your photo session for a time when your children are well-rested and fed. A hungry or tired child is rarely in the mood for photos (and let’s be honest — neither are parents!).
If we’re shooting at golden hour — just before sunset — make sure little tummies are full and bring along a few easy snacks to keep energy up.
4. Dress Them Comfortably
Comfortable kids are happy kids. Choose soft, breathable fabrics that let them move freely — cotton, linen, or knits work beautifully.
Avoid anything itchy, stiff, or too tight, and remember to check tags and seams that might bother sensitive skin. If your session involves play, grass, or sand (hello, Wellington Point beach!), bring a change of clothes just in case.
5. Bring a Few Familiar Items
Sometimes, a favourite toy or small comfort item can help shy kids feel at ease. Bring something that feels familiar — a soft toy, a blanket, or even a family pet! These can help calm nerves and often make for the sweetest candid moments in your photos.
6. Don’t Stress if Things Don’t Go Perfectly
Kids will be kids — and that’s exactly what makes your family unique.
If someone gets a little cranky, needs a break, or wants to run around, that’s okay. We allow plenty of time for pauses, play, and genuine connection.
Some of the most heartwarming, story-filled images come from those in-between moments — not the posed ones.
7. Keep Your Cool and Go With the Flow
Children pick up on your energy. If you’re relaxed and having fun, they’ll mirror that energy.
So, take a deep breath, smile, and enjoy being together. We’ll handle the rest — from the gentle direction to capturing the moments you’ll treasure forever.
